AN EVENING WITH DEMENTIA Theatre at the Mill

Portrayal of mental illness engages audience

There are possibly more uplifting ways to spend a Friday night than watching a one-man play about mental illness. But An Evening with Dementia, with a sell-out Edinburgh Festival run behind it, proved to be an engaging 75 minutes.

The award-winning production puts the audience inside the mind of an old man in a care home, played by Trevor T Smith. You might expect a play like this to focus on subjects like memory loss, inadequacy or the nature of death – and Smith tackled these with aplomb. But surprisingly there was humour. “Never use a name, even if you think you know it,” said the old man, eliciting knowing laughter from the crowd. The performance connected with many, perhaps able to relate from personal experience.
